A Baby Girl’s First In-Home Family Photo Session [Clarke]

Jessica and Jaedon’s emotional moments with their new baby girl

When Jessica and Jaeden gave me the address for their in-home family photo session, I was surprised because I had no idea where it was! I’ve shot a lot of newborn photography around Lethbridge but I’d never seen this address before, or anything close to it.

When I arrived (with the help of Google Maps), their property took my breath away. The family lives at a prairie resort, with sweeping vistas and a gorgeous reservoir – a little slice of paradise they get to enjoy with their new baby girl, Clarke.

As we set up for the photoshoot, the newborn of the hour was sleeping like a lamb. Little Clarke looked like a china doll – and never made a peep!

Meaningful props made for a tender family photo session

Once we were set up, Jessica brought out a few props she’d been thinking about using, and each one was not only cute, but filled with personal meaning for their family.

She brought out a pair of antlers that reflected one of her family’s favourite pastimes – hunting, as well as a beautiful old pearl necklace Jessica’s grandmother had given her on her wedding day. She also pulled out a decorative pink flower ring, which Clarke fit perfectly inside – and looked absolutely adorable in!

But I didn’t notice the best ‘prop’ until later on in the session. A moment came when Jaedon was holding baby Clarke close, and I noticed a couple of his tattoos: one of a rose on his hand, and on his arm, mountains and forest.

Jaedon said the rose tattoo was to commemorate his late father, who passed away a few years ago from pancreatic cancer; and the mountain range amidst the trees represented his roots: the home him and Jessica had left when they came to be with his sick father.

Honouring the past

When his dad had been diagnosed, Jaedon and Jessica had been heartbroken.

“We literally sold almost everything we owned and left our lives in the mountains to be with him… after his father passed, Jaedon was offered the same job his father had, taking care of the resort we live at, so we decided to stay,” Jessica said.

Having the representation of Jaedon’s father there in the photo with little Clarke was so touching. The emotion of that moment was pure and raw, and I was honoured to be a part of it and to help capture and honour the memories of the past with the new life of the present.

In-home family photo sessions

I loved working with Jessica, Jaedon and Clarke. Jessica’s dedication to bringing both sides of the family into the photo shoot with special props made every shot feel special and filled with meaning. I was honoured to share each emotional moment with them, and after the newborn shoot, I was happy to hear Jessica and Jaeden enjoyed the experience, too.

“I appreciated how fast and smoothly everything went,” Jessica said. “You really knew your stuff when it came to posing.”

I absolutely love hearing feedback from my clients, but a ton of the kudos goes out to Jessica and Jaeden for putting so much effort and emotion into preparing for this shoot. With a gorgeous setting, meaningful props, and a beautiful family, my job was easy!
