Creative Barbie Portraits [Fashion and Couples Photos]

The quarantine meant I couldn’t photograph any real people for a while, so I grabbed all my Barbies when I was by my parents’ place and gave them a try at modelling. One of the biggest challenges was selecting outfits out of the strange collection I had (which totally will inspire a future photoshoot), though I was glad I had a diverse collection of doll types. Oh, there’s also the challenge of how none of the old Barbies had movable joints! I am amazed at some of the poses I balanced them in (plus a good chunk have Cam just out of frame holding feet).

I used this opportunity to play in the spring blossoms and try out a few experimental lighting techniques and multiple exposures. I’m so glad to have finally tried Barbie portraits!

(For behind the scenes videos of some of the more creative shots, you can check out my Instagram story highlights.)

First up is Pocahontas who did some fashion gown modelling. She used to work for Disney so she was a pro at this!

Nakoma & Mel were the first couple I got to work with. Aren’t they lovely? They both worked in the entertainment industry (one is a singer and one is an actress). Nakoma was referred to me by her best friend Pocahontas, who you saw in the last set.

With this couple I tried out some in-camera multiple exposures and using every day objects to change the light. We also spent a lot of time checking out the spring blossoms together.

Lastly I worked with another couple, Teresa & Kenneth. (If Kenneth looks familiar, that’s probably thanks to his famous blonde ex, but I assure you, he’s madly in love with Teresa now!)

I did most of their photos in my back yard. It was overcast and quite late, but since they had hoped for golden hour images, I created it for them! (In a bit of rain, I might add… it’s probably good my fence is quite tall so the neighbours don’t think I’m stranger than they already do.) The rain was inspiring but was not coming down heavy enough, so we recreated a more perfect rainfall in my bathtub. Good thing these models are so short that they could fit in there!
