Donovan & Brittany, Birds of Prey Centre alternative Wedding

In what might be one of our most unique weddings of the year, Brittany and Donovan held an Alberta Birds of Prey Centre alternative wedding amongst all of the adorable ducks, owls, and eagles in Coaldale! Brittany loves animals and when they were looking for a unique, rarely used ceremony location, the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation was a perfect fit.

They had an emotional and happy wedding there with their closest friends and family and then got to play with some ducks and owls before we headed back into Lethbridge. The post office building downtown was a perfect location for their subdued, cool wedding hues (and Brittany’s rad hair) and she rocked her tattoos with her wedding dress while Donovan sported his awesome trademark mustache.

They were a hilarious group to spend the day with and were such wonderful hams in front of the camera. :)

Congratulations, Donovan and Brittany!

Fun Coaldale couples session with couple holding owl

I can now say I’ve done portrait photography involving eagles and owls! Marianne works at the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale and with it being off-season we had special access to the whole place to do a fun Coaldale couples session with her and her boyfriend Tom.

They were so easy to work with and the centre made for an amazing backdrop, plus it didn’t hurt that Marianne’s not afraid to handle giant birds of prey! We were first able to pick out a gorgeous Bald Eagle, and then visited the owl sanctuary for a Great Horned Owl. The eagle showed off his awesome wingspan, though the owl was a little more reserved and decided it was better to watch out for the resident cat who followed us around for attention. Tom was very brave taking a turn holding the large bird! (more…)

Birds of Prey Centre

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Last year we were asked in Photo Club to donate any photos of “Albertan animals” to the Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale for a photo exhibit they were putting on. My gopher photo was one of the images chosen, so I was given a free guest pass for this year, which I finally used recently.

I wasn’t as intrigued as last year, as I exhausted the photos I could take that time around (opting to take more “noble” looking photos of the birds), so I spent much less time there on this visit. It didn’t help that I felt too impatient to wait for the flight demonstration, after which I could hold an owl again! However, I was pleasantly surprised with some of the photos I captured… all animals can be quite amusing if you watch them long enough!
