Superhero [Lens Factor Project: Fantasy theme]

Lens Factor Project, fantasy theme, Lethbridge superhero cosplay photos

As soon as I found out fantasy was a theme, my mind was full of superhero images rather than the traditional medieval concepts that are associated with the term. Originally I thought of putting Kayla in another theme but I’m glad I switched her around because she was so perfect as the heroine in this series. The timing was so tricky because we needed a bright blue twilight amidst a week of rain, but everything came together perfectly, including violent Lethbridge wind to assist with our cape. Kayla was amazing at holding still and resolute in the gusts that nearly knocked us all over on the overpass!

I got to recycle a few pieces of old dance costumes for this shoot; it pays to be a clothing hoarder, right? ;)

Model: Kayla Avison
Theme: Fantasy

This photo is part of the Lens Factor Photo Project in which 5 photographers were given teams of 5 models and given 5 themes to work with. The results were kept secret until all final images were revealed at once. I took a number of photos for each theme and my out-takes appear below!

Lethbridge Fantasy Night Portraits [Elizabeth]

Lethbridge fantasy night portraits

I had so much fun doing Elizabeth’s costume photos last year so I was really excited when she contacted me again this year to do another fantasy concept shoot. This time the theme was around light based magic, inspired by a book series she is reading, and night portraits involving light painting were the perfect way to pull it off.

We found a flat spot near Lethbridge’s Pavan Park to get lots of wide open sky just after sunset and started with her blue and white fan veils she has been learning. The nice thing about fan veils is you don’t need to wait for the wind to make them look really cool :) We did a few ghosting photos with those, then it was finally dark enough to pull out the light painting tools!

Elizabeth was awesome at holding still while I ran around her and we all dealt with a swarm of mosquitoes :)

Park Lake Mermaid Portraits [Miss Marin]

park lake mermaid portraits

As a treat for Marin’s 10th birthday, she got to transform into a beautiful mermaid! Park Lake was a perfect backdrop for her mermaid portraits that evening with its gorgeous views of the water. The docks and rocks against the lake were perfect for a mermaid to come out onto land and Marin was all for climbing on everything! She had some pretty great skills in hopping around with a fin on, while her dad helped her with the more difficult terrain :)

Her mermaid tail was so fun to play around with and I’m sure she’ll get lots of use out of it this summer. It definitely deserves a few more swims!

Lethbridge film photography portrait session

Finally, a new film photography session! I started trying to use up my film two years ago with Beth, and somehow the time got away from me! This means the film was expired by an extra two years and thanks to my camera eating the first roll of film, I ended up switching to 800 ISO. Oh, the grain! I’ve toned it down a bit after scanning but the age of the film is starting to show. Maybe by the next session I do like this we’ll start seeing some awesome color distortion :)

My model this time was Jenni. I’ve danced with her for a few years now and thought her tribal bellydance outfit and steampunk costume would be awesome to capture with film. We timed things perfectly to get the tail end of the canola fields being in season in Lethbridge and I’m so happy with how the film captured the colors. Jenni did a great job and I so appreciate her patience when the first roll of film died on us.

Lethbridge Jessica Rabbit cosplay photos

I love themed photo shoots so having an opportunity to photograph Amanda as Jessica Rabbit was super exciting. Jessica is such a classic character with so much charisma, and I had to make the photos sensual with a little pinup while still pulling off an over the top cartoon character. Amanda really brought the character to life, and I have to give a huge thank you to the Owl Acoustic Lounge for letting us use a corner of their space that afternoon as it was absolutely perfect as a backdrop. Makeup was once again done by the talented Katt Panic (I love how she cleverly hid the real eyebrows). (more…)

Lethbridge portrait photos of girl in cosplay, Japanese fans

I was so excited when Elizabeth came to me with her costume ideas for a photography session, both of which were female-warrior inspired but vastly different from each other! With some wonderful makeup and hair work from Katt Panic before our session, we first set out to do an Asian style theme in the lush trees, followed by a Viking style over at the coulees. I love that Lethbridge has such diverse landscapes that we could pull off such different looks within 10 minutes of each other! Elizabeth was great to work with and I love her creativity in coming up with the main idea. (more…)
