An Explosion of World Dance and Music, our 2015 Lethbridge show!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

Ammena Dance Company’s “An Explosion of World Dance and Music” 2015 is coming soon! Tickets will be on sale on February 3rd at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge and this year we are doing two shows again: Friday March 6th and Saturday March 7th!

We have a lot of black and red costumes in the show this year, including our awesome broadway tango finale piece, so it was important to get those colors into the poster. Plus, after saying we wouldn’t have a lot of props to dance with this year, Ammena Talhami brought in all kinds of goodies for us! Candles will be a big part of the show, so we covered the floor with them (which were much easier to clean up than rose petals!).

Because the setup wasn’t as complicated as last year, we got to sneak in a few extra non-poster photos as well :)

This year’s show will feature bellydance, Bollywood, dancehall, burlesque, tango, broadway, and more, so please come check it out!

Lethbridge film photography portrait session

Finally, a new film photography session! I started trying to use up my film two years ago with Beth, and somehow the time got away from me! This means the film was expired by an extra two years and thanks to my camera eating the first roll of film, I ended up switching to 800 ISO. Oh, the grain! I’ve toned it down a bit after scanning but the age of the film is starting to show. Maybe by the next session I do like this we’ll start seeing some awesome color distortion :)

My model this time was Jenni. I’ve danced with her for a few years now and thought her tribal bellydance outfit and steampunk costume would be awesome to capture with film. We timed things perfectly to get the tail end of the canola fields being in season in Lethbridge and I’m so happy with how the film captured the colors. Jenni did a great job and I so appreciate her patience when the first roll of film died on us.

An Explosion of World Dance and Music, our 2014 Lethbridge show!

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

Ammena Dance Company’s “An Explosion of World Dance and Music” 2014 is just about here! Tickets will be on sale on February 4th at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge and this year we are finally doing TWO shows: Friday February 28th and Saturday March 1st!

There are a lot of props being used in the dance pieces this year so it was important to incorporate some of them into the poster. The petals and the fan veils were the most colorful props, so of course they seemed like the most natural fit! Ammena had to hold much less still this year since she had the floor helping her with her poses, so I think she had a much nicer modeling experience (as opposed to last year where I made her hold still for up to 5 minutes at a time!).

Oh, and by the way, we did two posters this year! The second is behind the cut: (more…)

An Explosion of World Dance and Music, our 2013 Lethbridge show!

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Ammena Dance Company’s “An Explosion of World Dance and Music” 2013 will be taking place on Saturday March 2nd at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge.

Tickets will be on sale on February 5th and seeing as how they sold out within a week last year, make sure you pick yours up early! But don’t go until I get the tickets I need to pick up ;)

With Bollywood and Bhangra being back in a big way this year, our goal was to combine that with more of a burlesque style (another big feature of the show). However, when it came down to poster design, I wasn’t feeling that the Bhangra photos were blending in and just focused on the cute feather showgirl costume that was chosen!

Ammena did her own hair and makeup for the Bhangra photoshoot, and the super talented Jenn joined us the next evening to totally capture the classic showgirl look.

This year’s show is just as diverse as the others, featuring Afro-Cuban, Bollywood, Bhangra, dancehall, jazz, tap, and as usual, bellydance. Sadly I’m not doing a solo this year as I needed to focus on my own wedding planning, but I still found the time to be in four group pieces!

Lana Gabor art opening and dance performance, Lethbridge, Alberta

I recently attended the reception for Tracing the Elusive Past of the Chinarians, featuring works from the collection of Lana Gabor, and highly recommend you go check it out at the Helen Christou Gallery! I used to dance with Lana when she lived in Lethbridge, so I was excited to hear she was coming back from Vancouver for her show opening at the University of Lethbridge. She performed one dance piece for the opening, showing off her amazing talent :) (more…)

An Explosion of World Dance and Music, our 2012 Lethbridge show!

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Ammena Dance Company’s “An Explosion of World Dance and Music” 2012 will be taking place on Saturday March 3rd at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge. This year’s show is just as diverse as the last, featuring bellydance, samba, Bollywood, burlesque, and an awesome tango piece. For once I am doing a proper bellydance as my solo this year… but that’s just too boring, so I picked some Lady Gaga to do it to!

Tickets will be on sale soon and they always sell out before the night of the show, so make sure you pick yours up early!

Since the tango piece is our big number this year, we went with that as the theme for the poster. Lise-Anne was a fabulous model as always, and like last year, couldn’t blink the whole time because of the extravagant eyelashes Jen gave her :)

Please note: As usual, due to my heavy involvement in this show, I will be taking very limited sessions between now and mid-March. If you would like to book a session in that time, please contact me at info@tanyaplonka.com for availability, or I can schedule you in for April and beyond. I am still able to meet up for any wedding consults during this time, so don’t hesitate to ask if you would like to find out more about wedding collections for 2012!
