An Explosion of World Dance and Music 2011, Lethbridge

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

The time is once again upon us where dance is all I can think about and all my weekends are spent doing it! Ammena Dance Company’s “An Explosion of World Dance and Music” 2011 will be taking place on Saturday March 5th at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge. As usual we will have a very diverse show, this year throwing in a few new genres… I might be doing a robot-inspired bellydance, but you’ll have to come to the show to find out ;)

Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but will be available at the Yates Box Office soon.

The poster was so much fun to do! We have some cabaret influences this year, as well as fabulous masks for our big bellydance number, so I wanted to work that in. Jen did an amazing job on Ammena (she definitely had a Lady Gaga thing going on), though with those big eyelashes and bedazzled lips it was hard for her to do many facial expressions :)

Model, Wardrobe: Ammena Talhami
Makeup Artist and Hair: Jen Murray
Concept: Tanya

Please note: Due to my heavy involvement in this show as well as other obligations, I will be taking very limited sessions between now and April. If you would like to book a session in that time, please contact me at info @ tanyaplonka.com for availability, or I can schedule you in for April. I am still able to meet up for any wedding consults during this time, so don’t hesitate to ask if you would like to find out more about wedding packages for 2011! (Dates for weddings are going fast, by the way!) (more…)

Mary and the Windmills

Friday, October 8th, 2010

As I mentioned in the previous entry, when doing the photos for the last issue of ArtsBridge I was asked to shoot within the theme of the interaction between the environment, arts, and science, and immediately the big windmills throughout Southern Alberta came to mind. I dragged Mary out towards Cardston just before sunset and made her repeatedly jump for me :)

Though the publication was in black and white, the colors that evening were so rich and saturated, so I’m excited to show the color versions of the images.

Thank you Mary for being such an awesome model! (more…)

The next big Bellydance show in Lethbridge!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

It’s that time of year again!

Ammena Dance Company is once again putting on An Explosion of World Dance and Music (2010 edition!), held at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge on Saturday March 6. Lethbridge is really a hot bed for multi-cultural events, and this year our show is no exception. In addition to multiple Bellydance pieces, we will also feature Bollywood, Merengue, Ukrainian, Hungarian, and Bhangra (which has been co-choreographed by a legitmate Punjabi Bhangra dancer!), as well as musical performances by local musicians.

Tickets aren’t on sale quite yet, but will be soon at the Yates Ticket Centre.

I did the poster design, and the photo is once again by Jan Tajcnar, who photographed our big show last year!

I’m allowed to do shameless self-promotion for my hobbies on my blog! :)

Please note: Due to my heavy involvement in this show, I will be taking very limited sessions between now and March 15th. If you would like to book a session in that time, please contact me at info @ tanyaplonka.com for availability, or I can schedule you in for March. I am still able to meet up for any wedding consults during this time, so don’t hesitate to ask if you would like to find out more about wedding packages for 2010!

Rush Dance Montage 09, Lethbridge

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Last week GS Lakie middle school and LA Dance company put on a fantastic dance show, Rush Dance Montage, with all of their students at the Yates Memorial Centre. Music students of the school opened the show with each of their rock bands while the crowd filled the auditorium (I wish my school had had a rock program!), and this was a first performance for many of them but they did so great! They were followed by an hour of super impressive dancing, with dancers ranging in age from teeny tiny (3 or 4) to adults. The show had such diversity, covering hip hop, lyrical, Latin, Afro-Caribbean, contemporary, Irish, etc etc. My favorites were the Bollywood piece (naturally) and the Michael Jackson tribute. There are a ton of talented dancers in this city! I really wish the show had been much longer than an hour! Kristi did such a fantastic job putting this together :) (more…)

A Night at the Harem poster

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Here is the poster I made for our upcoming bellydance dance show, A Night at the Harem! The two photos I used are by the lovely Jan Tajcnar.

If you’re in the Lethbridge area, check it out next Saturday!

Desert Winds Bellydancers

Monday, July 6th, 2009

As part two of my Dragon Boat Festival photos, I bring to you the Desert Winds Bellydancers! This is a different troupe than I am in (I’m with Ammena Dance Company), so I don’t always have a chance to see them perform. They debuted this circus routine at our big dance show in March, so I was only able to watch it from the side stage. It was so fantastic to sit in the audience for once and soak it all in!
