Beth on Film | Personal Project

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

It seems like a lifetime ago now, but before digital I shot with film! I learned photography with my film camera and it wasn’t until I was nearly finished university that I saved up enough money for a DSLR. Even then, I loved the tangibility of film and being able to see my b&w images develop before my eyes, as well as the rich quality of the photographs.

Over the past few years, my remaining canisters of film have been taking up room in my fridge and old camera bag, expiring more and more with each passing day. However, I am finally going to be making an effort to use this film!

Let’s face it, we’ve all gotten lazy with digital cameras. In a photo session I can fire off hundreds of photos, chimp, and get the framing right after looking at the first result. There’s very little need to get the photograph perfect on the first shot… and that’s just not acceptable!

Doing this project sets these limitations:

  • I can only use one roll of film for each one.
  • I can only do light digital enhancements on the photographs after scanning them.
  • I have to really pay attention to the light meter, or remember from experience how to ignore the light meter.
  • Every photo needs to be properly composed before I even half-press the shutter.

Beth was my first go at this, and it was not without issues.

  • My scanner sucks!
  • I chimped (looked at the “display screen” on the back) after EVERY PHOTO. All I saw was an exposure reading. ;)
  • It was disappointing to find out later that a few images hadn’t turned out – but that just means I need to concentrate more next time!
  • I’m probably getting a few quality issues from using my digital lenses on a film body, but since my original camera only had a kit lens, I’m willing to make this compromise. I need me those primes!
  • Expired Kodak consumer film looks nasty compared to the expensive b&w Ilford film I got used to in university :)

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that it’s hard getting back into film, but I’m going to keep trying ;) (more…)

Ava, Shari, & Garett | Lethbridge Family Photos

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Shari and Garett go back to nearly the beginning of my photography career; I second shot their wedding with Hope only half a year after starting at that studio. Now they have a little family with their daughter Ava, who is an adorable, smiley, curly-haired girl but with all the stubbornness of the average two year old :)
Photos involved a lot of chasing her and as usual with kids that age, we tricked her into all kinds of photos! (more…)

Christian & Riley | Lethbridge Couples Photos

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Christian contacted me a little while ago to do photos of her and her boyfriend Riley with a “country theme,” which was super fun because I often try to make Lethbridge look more forested than it actually is and ignore what we have here!

Though they’ve only been serious for a year, they’ve known each other since middle school… aw! I can’t believe they were nervous about having photos taken; I mean, look at them! They just ooze cuteness. This blog post ended up being longer than my portrait ones normally are because I couldn’t narrow them down to just a few that I liked! :) (more…)

Chris and Sheana, a Lethbridge Wedding

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Chris and Sheana were married in Pavan Park on an absolutely beautiful, sunny day with their closest friends and family in attendance. Jan and I got to spend a few hours with them that day and we had a great time!

Everytime I’ve met with Chris and Sheana, I’ve been so impressed with how exceptionally nice they are. And when they are together and can be all lovey, they are so absolutely sweet. They are just such a perfect match! I’m so glad I was able to share your day with you :) (more…)

Eva, Alisa and Chris – Lethbridge Fall Family Photos

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I haven’t seen Eva since last year at Chris and Alisa’s wedding, and my has she grown! I had a great time with the family down in Pavan Park just before sunset and loved being able to photograph them again.

We started out the session with a four generation photo of Eva, Alisa, grandma, and great grandma; it was such a great idea to get all the girls together!

Eva was happiest when she was in charge of the car keys, so they ended up being a prop in most photos :) (more…)

Mitch and Kara, a Lethbridge Wedding

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Kara and Mitch were married a few weeks ago at a beautiful sunny ceremony in Pavan Park with their closest family and friends in attendance. I had a fantastic time with them because they put the utmost trust in me and did anything I told them to for the sake of photos! (I made them “work for it,” Kara told me with satisifaction in her voice.) They were kind enough to let me drag them out to Monarch for the majority of their formal photos, and I’m so glad we went there because that is one of the most diverse towns I have ever seen for locations!

I was also pleasantly surprised to find someone I’ve known for a few years in their bridal party – Lethbridge is small like that, so I’m actually surprised it doesn’t happen more often!

Kara and Mitch are a sweet couple, and I must say I love Kara’s “kissy face” she often makes.

Thanks to Andrew Suderman for helping out this time around! (more…)
