Wax Mannequin plays Lethbridge

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Early in August, Wax Mannequin played Lethbridge’s Slice Bar and Grill, and was a treat as always! I saw him earlier that weekend in Calgary, but his Lethbridge show was by far the better of the two. We really love him here, and you can tell how much he feels that in his performance. (more…)

Maria in the Shower

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

I hadn’t heard of Maria in the Shower until catching them open for Lily Fawn at the Slice a few weeks ago, but they impressed me in a huge way and were luckily playing their own show at Slice again the week after! Their music is a fun ecclectic blend of all kinds of delightful things and fantastic for dancing to. Not only is their music amazing, but they are top notch performers, never letting their energy wane for a moment; I’m sure the pictures speak volumes of that.

Check out their MySpace page! (more…)

Big John Bates back in Lethbridge

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

It’s been a while since they were last here, so Lethbridge was stoked Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz had finally returned to the city for one of their awesome rockabilly/burlesque shows. This was their first time playing at Henotic (which is unfortunately ending operations in two weeks), and it was a fantastic venue for this show. As usual I enjoyed every moment of their performance, and wish they could have played for several more hours!

Disclaimer: Some of these photos come pretty close to being topless (but in true burlesque style, the girls are wearing pasties!), so if side-boob offends you or if you are at work you better not click through the rest ;) (more…)

The next big Bellydance show in Lethbridge!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

It’s that time of year again!

Ammena Dance Company is once again putting on An Explosion of World Dance and Music (2010 edition!), held at the Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge on Saturday March 6. Lethbridge is really a hot bed for multi-cultural events, and this year our show is no exception. In addition to multiple Bellydance pieces, we will also feature Bollywood, Merengue, Ukrainian, Hungarian, and Bhangra (which has been co-choreographed by a legitmate Punjabi Bhangra dancer!), as well as musical performances by local musicians.

Tickets aren’t on sale quite yet, but will be soon at the Yates Ticket Centre.

I did the poster design, and the photo is once again by Jan Tajcnar, who photographed our big show last year!

I’m allowed to do shameless self-promotion for my hobbies on my blog! :)

Please note: Due to my heavy involvement in this show, I will be taking very limited sessions between now and March 15th. If you would like to book a session in that time, please contact me at info @ tanyaplonka.com for availability, or I can schedule you in for March. I am still able to meet up for any wedding consults during this time, so don’t hesitate to ask if you would like to find out more about wedding packages for 2010!

JPS Trio video shoot

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

As you can see, I am still catching up on a few things! Back in December the JPS Trio invited all their fans out to Henotic to take part in the filming of their first music video, done by the multi-talented Dan Berdusco of Lethbridge Link. The cameras stayed rolling all night while the crowd danced to to the band’s energetic set of originals and a few funky covers. The band is hoping to get this video onto MuchMusic, so wish them luck! Rush Dance Montage 09, Lethbridge

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Last week GS Lakie middle school and LA Dance company put on a fantastic dance show, Rush Dance Montage, with all of their students at the Yates Memorial Centre. Music students of the school opened the show with each of their rock bands while the crowd filled the auditorium (I wish my school had had a rock program!), and this was a first performance for many of them but they did so great! They were followed by an hour of super impressive dancing, with dancers ranging in age from teeny tiny (3 or 4) to adults. The show had such diversity, covering hip hop, lyrical, Latin, Afro-Caribbean, contemporary, Irish, etc etc. My favorites were the Bollywood piece (naturally) and the Michael Jackson tribute. There are a ton of talented dancers in this city! I really wish the show had been much longer than an hour! Kristi did such a fantastic job putting this together :) (more…)
